Birdwatching is a unique and fun hobby that can be done with family and friends this summer! The BC Bird Trail—the official guide to birding and conservation in our beautiful province—will fast-track your next birdwatching expedition with helpful resources, bird checklists, itineraries, and more.
Vancouver Birdwatching
Ready to get outside, ASAP? Grab the binoculars and head to the seashore. Close to Vancouver, the warmer months that kick off each year lend themselves to waterbirds, such as sea ducks, so best bring along a checklist and check them off as you see them. From Surf Scoters and Long-tailed Ducks to Buffleheads and Northern Pintails, the thrill of the hunt will keep you excited as you scour the shorelines for these feathery beauties.
Fraser Valley Bird Trail
Looking for adventure further afield? The BC Bird Trail makes it easy to plan a day trip from the city. One of our favourite routes is the Fraser Valley Bird Trail, which encompasses one of the province's richest birdwatching regions and is home to more than 200 distinct bird species. This region includes Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Langley, and the Harrison River Valley.
Central Vancouver Island Trail
Heading to the island? Check out the Central Vancouver Island Trail, with itineraries that take you to Nanaimo, Cowichan, and Parksville-Qualicum Beach. Keep an eye out for seabirds such as loons and scooters.
South Fraser Bird Trail
Surrey, Richmond, and Delta are the main stops on the South Fraser Bird Trail, where the mighty Fraser River empties into the Salish Sea. Highlights include Green-winged Teals, Red-necked Grebes, resident Bald Eagles, Peregrine Falcons, Red-tailed Hawks, and possibly even some Short-eared Owls!
