All-electric driving is set to become easier and more convenient than ever thanks to a new initiative being rolled out by Mercedes-Benz. The automaker has announced plans for an extensive new charging network based on high-powered points, starting in Canada and the U.S. before rolling out globally.
How Many Stations Will There Be?
The first stage of the rollout will provide more than 400 new charging stations across North America, which will include more than 2,500 individual chargers. The ultimate goal is said to be more than 10,000 chargers worldwide by the end of the decade.
Where Will Charging Be Available?
The earliest new stations, according to Mercedes-Benz, will be built in key cities and population centres, with an emphasis on locations near major retail developments, leisure destinations, and traffic arteries. Many, but not all, of the charging stations, will be added to existing Mercedes-Benz dealerships, and depending on the predicted traffic, each station will provide between four and 30 DC fast-chargers running at 350 kW for efficient charging. No matter where the stations are located, the company plans to install full security surveillance and shelters to ensure a safe and comfortable charging experience.
Who Can Use the Charging Network?
Mercedes-Benz says that its main intention is to promote wider EV ownership, helping to grow the market as a whole by vastly improving charging convenience. The company’s new charging stations will be available to owners of any EV that comes with a compatible connector. However, Mercedes-Benz drivers will enjoy greater convenience and preferred access over drivers of other brands. By using the Mercedes-Benz Electric Intelligence navigation software, owners of the brand can book charging spots in advance along their route, guaranteeing minimum wait times for hassle-free journeys.
Moreover, Mercedes-Benz drivers can use the company’s existing software to charge more easily while on the road. Simply by registering their vehicle for the Mercedes me Charge service, drivers can charge at any of the brand’s stations as well as thousands more from third-party providers, with payment taken automatically from their account. To accommodate other EV drivers and those who don’t wish to use automated payments, regular payment options also will be available at all of the new stations.
How Green Will the Stations Be?
For the basic charging infrastructure, Mercedes-Benz is partnering with MN8 Energy, a leading supplier of solar energy generation and storage technology. Not only will the chargers themselves be fed by renewable energy wherever possible, but the station’s lighting and other electrical facilities will be powered by solar panels if the location is suitable, as well.
When Will the Network Be Ready?
Mercedes-Benz aims to complete the North American segment of the network by 2027, with global expansion expected to be complete by 2030. Drivers in major cities can expect the first new stations to appear this year.
