As we approach the middle of summer, you'll feel those longer days, blue skies, and that unmistakable freshness in the air. Metro Vancouver is in close proximity to breathtaking destinations that will entice outdoor enthusiasts, foodies, and art lovers alike. If you’re ready to hit the road with the windows down, here are our suggestions for the ultimate summer day trip.
Golden Ears Park
An easy 1-hour and 20-minute drive from Vancouver, densely forested Golden Ears Park is one of our province’s biggest provincial parks, with an incredible selection of trails for both hiking and horseback riding. Do not miss a stop at Alouette Lake; it’s a stunning summer swimming spot, and on cooler days, opt for a canoe rental. They are available lakeside on weekends and are offered daily from late June to Labour Day.
Explore Squamish
Only one hour from downtown Vancouver, Squamish is an increasingly popular destination for day trips and weekend getaways. Craft beer lovers can spend the day meandering the stretch from Backcountry Brewing to A-Frame Brewing, ending up at the Howe Sound Inn & Brewing where you can actually tuck in for the night. Spend Saturday mornings browsing the vast selection of artisanal foods and wares at the Squamish Farmers Market before heading to Brackendale for some eagle-spotting along the river.
Harrison Hot Springs
Less than two hours from Vancouver proper, Harrison Hot Springs is the perfect lakeside destination for easy out-of-city leisure. Trout and sturgeon fishing is at its peak at this time of year, and guided expeditions are available if you don’t have your own tackle. A soak in the natural hot springs at the Harrison Hot Springs Resort is the ultimate way to unwind after nearby nature adventures. Plus, don’t miss stopping at Bridal Veil Falls for an easy but scenic spot to explore and picnic amongst lush trees and gorgeous waterfalls.
Salt Spring Island
Salt Spring Island is just a short ferry ride from the city. From breathtaking viewpoints to art studio tours and boutiques chock-full of artisanal goods, Salt Spring Island truly has it all. Perfect for an active day or weekend getaway, the island has plenty of picturesque routes to walk, run, or bike. No matter what adventure you’re craving—whether kayaking at sea, or enjoying a fresh cup of coffee in a cozy café—this island is a must-see coastal spot.
Tsawwassen Mills
If a day at the mall is on your summer wish list, head out to Tsawwassen Mills for an outlet shopping trip that stocks all the best designer brands. Before you go, book tickets to visit Stargazer - An Immersive Experience, which was curated by the Macmillan Space Centre. Open since April and on show through the summer months, this all-ages multi-sensory experience is guaranteed to satisfy any space-lover in the family. See replicas of rockets and space stations, gaze at a 270-degree wall and floor projected vio, and take in a VR production of Apollo 11 Quest using Oculus VR Goggles.
